SF Giants ace dismisses Cy Young talk, wants wins and ‘big changes’ instead

SAN FRANCISCO – San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Logan Webb believes Blake Snell should win the National League Cy Young Award this year. Why is that, Webb was asked.“Because he has a 2.30 (ERA), a 2.20, whatever it is,” Webb said of the San Diego Padres’ left-hander. “That’s pretty good.”Snell now has an MLB-leading 2.25 ERA after his exceptional performance Monday against the Giants, as he struck out seven over six scoreless innings. He’s also fourth with 234 strikeouts and has a solid 14-9 record for a Padres team that’s been well out of the playoff picture almost all season. But Webb outshined Snell in a terrific pitcher’s duel at Oracle Park and a rare highlight for the Giants this month. In the second complete game of his career, with both coming this season, Webb allowed nine hits but struck out seven as he gave the Giants a chance to come back and earn a 2-1 win, keeping their faint playoff hopes alive for at least another day.“It’s kind of hard trying to go pitch f...Olympic doping case of Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva opens Tuesday in Swiss sports court

The doping case of teenage Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva that shocked the 2022 Beijing Olympics returns to the highest court in sports on Tuesday. The Court of Arbitration for Sport begins a hearing set for at least three days with Valieva, now aged 17, expected to testify by video link from Russia in a case that was slow-walked in her home country and could now deliver a verdict by the end of the year.Awaiting the outcome are nine American skaters who could become Olympic champions in the team event after finishing second in Beijing behind the Russians and their star performer Valieva. The center of Valieva’s defense has been that her positive test for a heart medication banned in sports was caused by accidental contamination – maybe from a glass or plate – by tablets her grandfather claimed he took.Valieva and her legal team “intend to conduct further investigation and present the results” at future hearings in the case, the first Russian anti-doping tribunal to judge the ca...Powerball: el premio mayor sube a US$ 835 millones y estos son los números ganadores del 25 de septiembre

He had lasted fewer than four innings in three straight starts. “He looked great and threw the ball really well,″ Bochy said. “He threw the one pitch that got away from him for the home run, but I just like the way he regrouped. He looked so focused out there tonight.″One d...¿Avanza la lucha de Bruce Willis contra la demencia? Su esposa lo revela

CINCINNATI (AP) — Getting into the end zone seemed tougher for the Los Angeles Rams when it mattered most on Monday night. The Rams suffered a 19-16 loss to the Bengals in their first regular-season rematch of the Super Bowl after the 2021 season. While the Aaron Donald-led defense kept Cincinnati without a touchdown in the first half, the Rams’ offense behind a young, banged up offensive line couldn’t capitalize.“I think the biggest thing for us tonight was missed opportunities early in the game in the red zone,” quarterback Matthew Stafford said. “If we can come away with some sevens there it’s probably a little bit of a different game later on.” The Rams (1-2) were 1-of-4 in their red zone trips. Their lone touchdown came in the final two minutes of the game when Tutu Atwell went in from the 1-yard line to close the deficit to three points, but the ensuing onside kick was unsuccessful.Stafford got Los Angeles off to a good start going 2 for 2 to begin the game and Atwe...Webb goes distance, Conforto comes through in clutch as Giants top Padres 2-1 after Snell’s gem

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Logan Webb pitched his second complete game this season and pinch-hitter Michael Conforto delivered a two-run single in the eighth inning to lift the San Francisco Giants over the San Diego Padres 2-1 on Monday night in a matchup of teams clinging to slim playoff hopes.Blake Snell tossed six shutout innings in his latest terrific start for the Padres, lowering his major league-best ERA to 2.25 as the left-hander makes a final push for the NL Cy Young Award.Webb will probably get some votes, too, especially after what he did against the Padres. The game marked his 24th quality start this season — tops in the majors, according to the Giants. Webb, whose first career complete game was a shutout of Colorado on July 9, also leads the big leagues with 216 innings pitched.“This is a pretty significant statement game when you’re going up against another Cy Young Award candidate,” San Francisco manager Gabe Kapler said. “He was totally efficient, totally in control. SEATTLE (AP) — In a season where he said nothing has come easy, Justin Verlander picked the right moment to once again look like the ace he’s been for most of his career. Perfect timing for Verlander. Perfect timing for the Houston Astros. Verlander took a shutout into the ninth inning, allowing just three hits and worked out of the one jam he faced, and the Astros created some cushion in the AL playoff chase with a 5-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.Verlander put together a vintage performance befitting his status as one of the top right-handers in the game for most of his career. He was on the verge of his first complete game since 2019 when he no-hit Toronto, but manager Dusty Baker pulled Verlander after Josh Rojas led off the ninth inning with a double. Nevertheless, Verlander did his part with an effort Houston needed after being swept at home over the weekend by Kansas City. The Astros extended their lead to 1 1/2 games over Seattle for the final wild car...Latest news
