They were designed to be safer: How de-horned cows were doomed

Every year, millions of beef cattle are born without horns, a trait that naturally emerged in Scottish pastures in the 16th century and has since spared many lives from goring. But when UC Davis created horn-free dairy cattle — through gene-editing, rather than generations of routine breeding — federal regulators did not welcome the new bovines to the herd.Under rigorous federal rules established in the early years of the genomic revolution, and upheld during the Obama administration, genetically modified animals are considered to be a new type of veterinary pharmaceutical, needing FDA approval. Without it, meat and milk can’t enter the food supply. As a result, the nine cows — and the experiment — are now dead, burned, at a cost of $1,200 each.“It was a waste. There wasn’t any risk,” said animal geneticist and professor Alison Van Eenennaam of UC Davis, who spent seven years on the project. “Basically, they were an unapproved drug.”In this July 11, 2018 photo, animal geneticis...Brock Purdy relishes new dynamic in 49ers’ ever-changing quarterback room

Kingston Humane Society (KHS) is closed to the public until Friday due to a lack of capacity. While scheduled appointments and pound services with contracted municipalities will continue, the shelter is freezing visits and intakes for a week as a backlog of sheltered animals has become too much.KHS announced in a release on Friday that they would have to temporarily close to the public due to being overwhelmed by the number of animals on hand, with a recent influx of stray dogs compounding an already present lack of space issue. Executive Director Gord Hunter said that has become unsustainable and is forcing the shelter to take this action to get their heads back above water. “Intakes of stray dogs have jumped dramatically in the last week to 10 days,” said Hunter.“We either have to find a way to reduce our intakes or increase animals going into foster care orforever homes.”Hunter points towards a need for more foster volunteers, particularly for dogs, to help take some of the anima...South Florida expected to break records during Memorial Day rush

France’s Digital Minister Jean-Noël Barrot waded into a growing tussle between the European Union and Elon Musk’s Twitter on Monday, as he threatened the social media platform’s access to the bloc. In comments made on radio network France Info, the minister said that the U.S. company would be banned from the EU if it refused to follow the incoming European Digital Services Act, which goes into effect throughout the EU at the end of August. “Disinformation is one of the gravest threats weighing on our democracies,” said Barrot. “Twitter, if it repeatedly doesn’t follow our rules, will be banned from the EU,” the French minister added. The remarks mark an escalation of an ongoing fight between European politicians and Twitter, which was bought last year by Elon Musk, the controversial billionaire who also controls Tesla and SpaceX. Last week, POLITICO reported that the social media platform was withdrawing from the EU’s voluntary di...Latest news
