ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — Talor Gooch saw his double-digit overnight lead almost evaporate but rallied late to win the inaugural LIV Australia tournament Sunday at the Grange Golf Club. After two bogey-free 10-under 62 rounds, Gooch shot a 1-over 73 to clinch his maiden LIV Golf tournament victory by three strokes from a fast-moving Anirban Lahiri. As tournament leader, the 31-year-old American began his round on the first hole Sunday in the shotgun-start format and posted a birdie at the par-3 fifth but his bogey-free run finally ended at the par-5 seventh. He dropped a shot on the eighth and the slide worsened with a double-bogey at the 10th, which saw his lead over a fast-moving Lahiri cut to just two strokes with still eight holes to play. That was as close as it got as Gooch rallied with birdies at the 11th and 13th and made par at the par 4 18th to clinch the victory and $4 million of the $20 million purse.Lahiri shot 65 to finish second at 16-under, two shots ahead of a four-wa...

Garcia ready to get back to work after suffering first loss

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 18:48:57 GMT

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Ryan Garcia has already put the first loss of his career in the rearview mirror. After being stopped in the seventh round by a vicious liver shot from Gervonta Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) in a lightweight bout Saturday night that was billed as the year’s best fight to date, Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs) said he was disappointed and sad. But he planned on getting right back in the gym and returning whenever he can.“I’m already looking past it,” Garcia told The Associated Press. “You know, it’s all good. Lost today, but ready to get back into it whenever I can, which is in like three months. So from that, get right back into it.”Easier said than done, since Garcia will have to temporarily wear the tag of someone who appeared to get right out of the fight by taking a knee after Davis’ wicked left-handed dart to his body.It was a shot that solidified Davis as one of the sport’s pound-for-pound best fighters, and sent Garcia back down boxing’s ladder.Though one of the hardest things for...

Dear Abby: I can’t prove anything, but his wives’ deaths are suspicious

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 18:48:57 GMT

DEAR ABBY: My best friend, “Laura,” had an affair with a married man for 20 years. Now she’s married to him.He had been married twice before, and both wives died. He’s only 50, so I find it odd that both of his previous wives died. His second wife passed while Laura was his mistress. She is able to be married to him only because of the second wife’s death — he was never going to leave her.I don’t trust this man, but I feel I must because Laura is married to him and so happy. I’m suspicious that he may have had something to do with his wives’ deaths, but I don’t know how to prove it. Am I overly suspicious for thinking this?I’m happy for my friend because she is very happy now. They are both retired and enjoying their lives. I’m just hoping he’s honest and truly loves her.I’m not sure how to feel about this cheater, but it does take two — and Laura stayed with him for 20 years as his mistress. Pl...

China diplomat under fire in EU for questioning sovereignty of ex-Soviet countries

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 18:48:57 GMT

France and the Baltic states of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia are asking Beijing for answers after China’s top envoy to France questioned the independence of former Soviet countries like Ukraine. Lu Shaye, China’s ambassador to France, said in an interview on Friday with French television network LCI that former Soviet countries have no “effective status” in international law.Asked whether Crimea belongs to Ukraine, Shaye said that “it depends how you perceive the problem,” arguing that it was historically part of Russia and offered to Ukraine by former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.“In international law, even these ex-Soviet Union countries do not have the status, the effective [status] in international law, because there is no international agreement to materialize their status as a sovereign country,” he said. The comments sparked outrage among Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia — three former Soviet countries. Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs said i...

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — The U.S. military airlifted embassy officials out of Sudan on Sunday and international governments raced to evacuate their diplomatic staff and citizens trapped in the capital as rival generals battled for control of Africa’s third-largest country for a ninth straight day.Fighting raged in Omdurman, the city across the Nile from Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, residents reported. The violence came despite a declared truce that was to coincide with the three-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr.“We did not see such a truce,” said Amin al-Tayed from his home near state television headquarters in Omdurman. He said heavy gunfire and thundering explosions rocked the city. “The battles did not stop,” he said.Thick black smoke filled the sky over Khartoum’s airport. The paramilitary group battling the Sudanese armed forces claimed the military unleashed airstrikes on the upscale neighborhood of Kafouri, north of Khartoum. There was no immediate comment from the army. A...
