Derrick White’s growth has been important, and other Celtics takeaways from epic Game 6 win

MIAMI — What a difference a year makes for Derrick White. The Celtics guard was admittedly tentative when he arrived in Boston at last season’s trade deadline. He didn’t want to step on any toes. But he got over those initial jitters. He was confident and comfortable this season, and it showed in his performance as he became a full-time starter, one of the Celtics’ most important players and an All-Defensive team selection. What better way to show that growth than on Saturday night, when his miracle tip-in at the buzzer saved the Celtics’ season in epic fashion?“If you don’t know who D-White is, you know who he is now,” Marcus Smart said. “I mean, that dude has been phenomenal for us this whole, whole year. You know, just playing the way that we knew he could play when we picked him up.“It’s been refreshing for us, and it’s been a joy to watch and a joy to be on the court with him.”White’s humility has always stood out. The sixth-year guard has never been an attention-seek...Raccoon euthanized after pet store visit in Maine

AUBURN, Maine — A raccoon in Maine was euthanized and tested for rabies after a woman brought it into a pet store for a nail trim and some customers kissed it, state wildlife authorities said. The raccoon tested negative for the disease, and there is no rabies risk to the public, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife spokesperson Mark Latti said Sunday. However, raccoons are one of the most common carriers of rabies in the state, and bringing the wild animal into a pet store constituted an unnecessary risk to public health, Latti said. The woman, who has not been identified by authorities, brought the raccoon into an Auburn pet store on Tuesday, the wildlife department said. She was seeking to get the animal’s nails trimmed, which is a service the store does not provide to raccoons, the department said.Several different people handled the animal and some kissed it, the wildlife department said. The store’s manager then asked the woman to leave and contacted t...3-year-old fatally struck by car in Chula Vista

WASHINGTON (AP) — The reviews are starting to come in as details emerge about the debt ceiling agreement reached by President Joe Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.Already, some lawmakers are criticizing the deal as not doing enough to tackle the nation’s debt, while others worry it’s too austere and will harm many low-income Americans. The legislation will probably need support from a significant number of lawmakers from both parties to clear the closely divided House and gain the 60 votes necessary to advance in the Senate. Many lawmakers say they are withholding judgment until they see the final details.A look at how the agreement is going over so far:EARLY CONCERNSSome of the earliest objections are coming from the most conservative members of Congress, particularly members of the hardline House Freedom Caucus that often clashes with GOP leadership.“I think it’s a disaster!” tweeted Matt Rosendale, R-Mont.“Fake conservatives agree to fake spending cuts,” tw...George Maharis, star of TV’s ‘Route 66’ in the 1960s, dies at 94

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A bill intended to end the discrimination of hairstyles associated with race was signed into law Sunday by Gov. Greg Abbott. House Bill 567, better known as the CROWN Act, cleared its final hurdle on May 12 after it was passed by the Texas Senate 29-1. It was sent to Abbott's desk on May 16 and he made it law with his signature on Sunday. It goes into effect on Sept. 1. It passed the Texas House 143-5 on April 12.The CROWN Act is an acronym for Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair, and it prohibits school districts, colleges or universities, employers or labor unions to discriminate against any protected hairstyle as part of a dress code. In the bill, protected hairstyles are "braids, locks or twists."Rep. It was the middle of March and Royce Lewis was planning ahead. He knew the date he was eligible to return from the 60-day injured list — May 29 — and exactly where the Twins would be — Houston.Of course he did.“I want to be back as soon as they let me,” he said in March. At the time, the idea of Lewis coming back the first day he was eligible to return seemed far-fetched, like extreme optimism coming from a player who desperately wanted to return after a second knee surgery. Now, it’s a reality.Twins manager Rocco Baldelli announced Sunday that Lewis will be activated from the injured list ahead of the series opener in Houston. Max Kepler, who has been on the IL with a hamstring strain, will also be activated and outfielders Kyle Garlick and Matt Wallner will be optioned to Triple-A.“I think this is a culmination of a lot of hard work from Royce,” Baldelli said. “I’m excited to see Royce back out on the field. He can jolt you with the enthusiasm and all of the exciting things that he c...Keeler: Nuggets’ Jamal Murray is writing one of NBA’s greatest comeback stories. But will national media be too lazy to notice?

These are the days you almost wish Jamal Murray would lean into the microphone and just say something really, really dumb. Dumb with feeling.Something along the lines of “The moon is made of cheese,” or “The Easter Bunny is real,” or, “I talk to squirrels and they talk back.” Just so people would pay attention.Because here’s Murray, rolling into Hollywood like a boss and a star, writing one of the best individual comeback scripts in NBA history. And Disney shrugs.Speaking of dumb with feeling, after Denver swept the Lakers out of the postseason for the first time ever, longtime basketball scribe Chris Mannix had the sheer gall to hop onto Rich Eisen’s show and say this:“Frankly, the Nuggets aren’t very interesting … People just don’t find them as interesting as some of the teams on the bottom half of the bracket. They’re just not a compelling team to talk about, to write about.”Hang on, hang on. The Nuggets aren’t (makes air quotes with fingers) “compelling?”Have you ever listened t...Latest news
